How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car?

2022 GMC Hummer EV driving

Jasper drivers have several options when it comes to electric vehicle charging. Each type has different plugs, ports, and times. So, “how long does it take to charge an electric car?” It depends on the type of electric vehicle charging station. Here Bob Luegers Motors, Inc. explains the three main kinds of EV charging — domestic charging, rapid domestic charging, and public charging. Feel free to contact us with any questions!

Electric Car Charging Times by Type

Most Huntingburg drivers use a combination of these three types of electric vehicle charging stations.

  1. Domestic Outlet Home Charging (Standard Outlet): A normal grounded (three-prong) 110V/120V charging outlet is known as a Level 1 Charging type. It doesn’t provide a fast charging speed, but it’s good for topping off some of the power you used on your Loogootee commute. It typically takes around 24 hours or more for a full charge with a domestic outlet.
  2. Installed Brand-Approved Domestic Charging: Level 2 Charging types need to be professionally installed. Level 2 charging stations use rapid (240V+) chargers made specifically for your car brand. They have significantly faster-charging rates than domestic household outlets (type 1). With Level 2 fast chargers, you can obtain an 80% charge in only about 45 minutes, but the last 20% will take longer because there’s a diminishing rate of charging speed.
  3. Public Charging: Public Charging stations (Level 3) are available at many Evansville parking garages, shopping malls, hotels, and even some big-box stores like Walgreen. Plus, more public charging stations are being added daily. Some public chargers even utilize renewable energy sources like solar or wind. Level 3 charging can take only an hour or less!

Which Electric Vehicle Charging Type is Best For You?

Which charging method is best for you? Level 3 electric vehicle charging is only offered in public charging stations. Most EV drivers around Jasper combine rapid charging and Level 2 at-home charging and rely on rapid chargers for weekend road trips.

What about charging times for plug-in hybrids? Typically a PHEV takes between one to four hours to charge fully. The reason is that plug-in hybrids don’t rely solely on electricity for energy! They use electric power for a little while or at certain speeds and switch to gasoline power when needed.
