General Motors Truck Company: A History Timeline

GMC has a long history in the automotive industry. Here’s a quick look at some highlights from its historical timeline:

  • The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was founded by Max Grabowsky, and it produced some of the first trucks ever manufactured.
  • In 1909, General Motors acquired Rapid Motor, leading to the formation of the General Motors Truck Company.
  • In 1912, the company released the first mass-produced truck and sold over 22,000.
  • The U.S. Military relied heavily on the company during WWII. Over 600,000 trucks were manufactured for the military.

Fun Fact: You may have noticed that GMC and Chevrolet vehicles often have the same engines and feature sets. That’s because their trucks are produced in the same production plants using the same parts.
